FIFA has officially suspended the one-match ban for United States star striker Folarin Balogun. This historic decision was made after personal phone calls between U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino on 5th July 2026. Balogun had received a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on 1 July 2026.

According to the standard rule for a World Cup red card, Balogun would have faced a one-match ban. But FIFA used a rare clause to give him a reprieve. This has created a huge debate about political influence and the fairness of the tournament’s disciplinary system.
The Red Card Incident and the Sudden Reversal
The controversy started when Folarin Balogun stepped on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović in the 64th minute of their Round of 32 clash. Referee Raphael Claus initially missed the foul, but was told to check the incident by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Juan Soto. Following the review, Claus showed Balogun a straight red for serious foul play. The 25-year-old striker was set to miss the crucial knockout match against Belgium.
However, the situation changed on Sunday morning. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee said it would suspend the implementation of Balogun’s ban for a probationary period of one year. Under this ruling, Balogun would not have to serve his suspension immediately. Instead, the ban is on hold and will only be activated if he commits a similar offence within the next 12 months.
Donald Trump’s Role in the FIFA Decision
Reports quickly surfaced that political pressure played a major role in the reversal. President Donald Trump confirmed on 6 July 2026 that he personally asked Gianni Infantino to review the red card.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he did not think the incident was a foul and described it as two great athletes who simply crashed into each other. Furthermore, he labelled the Brazilian referee, Raphael Claus, as “very suspect” and suggested that people should “check his past”. President Trump praised FIFA on social media for reversing a great injustice.

Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino insisted that the judicial bodies acted independently. Infantino confirmed that he spoke with Trump but claimed he told the President that the case would be decided by competent, autonomous bodies.
How FIFA Used Article 27 to Help Balogun
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee explained that the decision was based on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This clause provides the committee with discretion to suspend the implementation of disciplinary measures, in whole or in part. FIFA commented that this was a balanced measure, taking into account the specific facts surrounding the incident.
However, it is very unusual to use Article 27 in this context. A red card usually brings an automatic one-match ban under Article 66.4 of the code and Rule 10.5 of the World Cup regulations. FIFA had told the media earlier that national associations could not appeal single-match suspensions during the tournament. Many legal experts and football officials were surprised by the disciplinary committee’s sudden intervention.
Global Backlash from Belgium and UEFA
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed astonishment and shock at the ruling. Belgium’s head coach, Rudi Garcia, compared the announcement to an April Fools’ Day joke. The RBFA filed an appeal to have the ban re-imposed, but FIFA dismissed it, stating that Belgium was not a party to the proceedings.
UEFA also issued a statement, claiming that FIFA had crossed a red line. The European governing body argued that the integrity of the game is at stake when rules are no longer guaranteed by their guardians.

England’s Thomas Tuchel and Norway’s Ståle Solbakken warned that this sets a dangerous precedent that could lead to a flood of random appeals for on-field decisions.
