The England and Wales Cricket Board announced a major change to its hiring rules for the next men’s Test head coach on Sunday. ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould confirmed at Lord’s that the new coach could potentially keep a job in the Indian Premier League while leading England.
This decision came immediately after the board sacked Brendon McCullum from the Test role following a poor run of results. Specifically, the ECB aims to remove barriers that might stop top-tier coaches from applying for the vacant position.

Consequently, this move opens the door for Andy Flower to return to the England setup. Flower currently coaches the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and might not want to leave that high-paying job.
However, the ECB now says they are willing to be progressive to get the right person. Meanwhile, Brendon McCullum will stay with the England team but will only focus on white-ball cricket formats. Therefore, the search for a new red-ball leader begins as England prepares for an upcoming series against Pakistan.
ECB Adopts Progressive Stance on Coaching Roles
Richard Gould explained that the modern cricket schedule is very busy for players and staff alike. He believes the board must adapt to how the game works today. Gould also mentioned that players already juggle their time between international games and franchise leagues. That has left the ECB open to a similar job-share arrangement for its coaching staff.
This new policy is a major departure from previous years. In the past the ECB often insisted that head coaches were full-time national team commitments. But the financial power of the IPL makes it hard for the ECB to match for the best talent. The IPL’s short three-month window is often liked by top coaches because it pays very well and gives them more time at home. So the ECB has decided that allowing a coach to work in both the IPL and Test cricket is a compromise it has to make.

Andy Flower is the current favourite to take over from Brendon McCullum. He was England boss during a golden era from 2009 to 2014. In that period, he was crucial in England reaching the top of the world Test rankings. He also took the side to three Ashes series wins, including a famous win in Australia.

Flower is currently 58 years old and has a huge reputation in T20 cricket. He took Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back IPL titles in 2025 and 2026. However, the ECB’s new stance on the IPL might change his mind. Former captain Nasser Hussain has already urged the ECB to do anything to bring Flower back. Specifically, Hussain praised Flower for his meticulous attention to detail.
Why England Sacked Brendon McCullum
The ECB decided to sack Brendon McCullum following a number of defeats in the Test format. He started his reign with 10 wins from 11 matches but the side soon dropped in form. England have lost seven of their last nine Test matches. This included a 4-1 series loss in the Ashes and a home series defeat against New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the ECB felt that a new leader was needed to rebuild the team before next summer’s Ashes. Despite losing the Test role, McCullum remains well-liked by the board. So, he will now devote his full attention to the ODI and T20 teams.
The Challenges of a Job-Share Arrangement
Richard Gould admitted that IPL dates are fixed and might clash with the international schedule. The IPL auction often happens in December, which can conflict with winter tours. Also, coaches may get distracted by their franchise duties during international series.
