Cricket Australia officially released the full schedule for the 16th Big Bash League (BBL|16) season today. The tournament starts on 12 December with a historic opening match in Chennai, India.
This 44-game season features the return of Christmas Eve cricket and a grand final on the Australia Day public holiday in 2027. Eight teams will compete in 40 regular-season matches before a four-game finals series decides the champion.
A Historic International Season Opener in India
The BBL|16 season marks the first time the league will play a match outside of Australia in its 16-year history. The Melbourne Renegades will host the reigning champions, the Perth Scorchers, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This landmark event occurs on 12 December, starting at 8:10 pm AEDT.
The match coincides with the fourth day of the first Test match between Australia and New Zealand in Perth. Therefore, cricket fans can enjoy a full day of international cricket followed immediately by the Big Bash opener.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the historic fixture last week. Following this international start, the Australian leg of the tournament begins on 15 December. The Brisbane Heat will host the Sydney Sixers at the Gabba for the first match on Australian soil.
The Return of Christmas Eve and Holiday Cricket
Cricket Australia has listened to fans and brought back the popular Christmas Eve fixture. The Melbourne Renegades will host the Hobart Hurricanes at Melbourne’s Junction Oval on 24 December. This is the first Christmas Eve BBL match in four years.

Night cricket is now possible at Junction Oval because workers installed broadcast-quality floodlights over the winter. Consequently, the 75-minute flight between Melbourne and Hobart allows Hurricanes players to return home on Christmas morning to be with their families. While Christmas Day remains the only day without a match, the rest of the holiday period is full of cricket.
The schedule includes blockbuster double-headers on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. On Boxing Day, the Sydney Sixers play the Brisbane Heat at the SCG. Immediately following that game, the Perth Scorchers face the Melbourne Stars. Additionally, the Adelaide Strikers will host their traditional New Year’s Eve match against the Melbourne Stars at the Adelaide Oval.
Australia Day Grand Final and Finals Format
The BBL|16 season will conclude on the Australia Day public holiday. The grand final takes place on Tuesday, 26 January 2027. This date ensures that the tournament finishes before the Australian Test squad leaves for their series in India.
The league will use the same four-team finals format as previous seasons. This format is similar to the one used in the Indian Premier League. The top four teams on the ladder qualify for the post-season.
The finals series begins with the Qualifier on 19 January, where the first and second-placed teams play for a direct spot in the final. The loser of that match gets a second chance in the Challenger match. Importantly, Cricket Australia added an extra rest day between the Challenger and the final this year to help teams with their travel schedules.

Fans can watch every single ball of the BBL|16 season live. Kayo Sports and Foxtel will broadcast all 44 matches. This coverage includes ten matches that are exclusive to Fox Cricket.

The Seven Network and 7plus will also broadcast 30 regular-season matches and all four finals live and free. Tickets for the matches will go on sale to the general public on 20 August 2026. However, fans who sign up for CricketPlus can access a pre-sale starting on 18 August.
