The appointment is to strengthen Ireland’s tactical preparations for the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series starting in August. Trott was recently the head coach of the Afghanistan national team, which means he has the expertise of Ireland’s next opponent.

Jonathan Trott will start consultation next week. His role is for 14 days and focuses on the team’s training camp and first matchdays. Trott will specifically help the players and coaching staff prepare for the high-pressure environment of 50-over cricket.
Trott will be offering tactical advice to the Ireland squad on matchdays for the 1st and 2nd ODIs against Afghanistan. The team is seeking to leverage his deep knowledge of the Afghan players’ styles and strategies to gain an advantage.

The Ireland coaching staff wants to enhance the players’ skills and knowledge of the 50-over game. Trott’s approach and methodology in leading international teams will help Irish staff to develop their own strategic planning skills. His presence in the training camp is considered a real boost for the entire group.

Jonathan Trott’s Cricket Career and Coaching Record
Jonathan Trott, 45, brings a wealth of experience to Ireland Cricket. He was a very successful player as a top-order batter for England between 2007 and 2015. Trott started coaching and he took on several key roles. He also worked with Warwickshire, Kent, and the Scottish national team. He also served as an assistant coach for the England Under-19 team at the 2017 World Cup.
But perhaps his finest hour as a coach came during his time as Afghanistan head coach from 2022 to 2026. He took Afghanistan to new heights on the world stage in cricket. More importantly, he took them to their first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024. His contract with Afghanistan ended in February 2026, making him available for the new Ireland role.
